It's so frustrating to see how things could done better if only the people higher up would listen -- and if weren't hell bent on letting corporations wring every damned cent out of everything.

Yes, agree. Having a longer-term view can pay off. It isn’t like Thailand doesn’t already have the t-shirt on this, the country is littered with trashed islands. Very much a depressing rinse and repeat cycle.

It makes me feel guilty about coming back next year. We previously spent time on Koh Lanta, which, well, is Koh Lanta. We need to find a way return without making the world worse.

Ko Lanta is a good example of some kind of a middle ground. It hasn’t gone full-Phuket/Samui/Chang style, and there are (or were) some interesting programmes going on there. But yeah, often I just decide not to return. Lipe, like Phi Phi, extreme examples perhaps, but is frustrating how no lessons ever seem to be learned, or, that what has been learned elsewhere isn’t applied until the horse has well and truly bolted.

Yeah, that was how Ko Lanta struck me. I didn't love some of the the huge/fancy places right along the beach but much of it was still quite nice and integrated. And it was very easy to spend our money directly with locals, which was very important. As for lessons being learned, well, I'm in Sarajevo right now and just took a walking tour and the young man referenced the "Never forget" mantra from the Holocaust, gestured in the direction of Ukraine and sadly said, "Never learn" is much more like it.

See the picture of that lovely simple bungalow has me longing for a place “like that.”
