Heehee! I was offered the same scam and also politely declined! Travelling Thailand in the early 80’s was both delightful and dodgy, more often than not from broke and devious fellow travellers! A strong intuition ruled many decisions in those pretty wild old days. Good to hear others had similar experiences. There was also a place on the East Coast of Malaysia, name forgotten now, that ran a family ‘break and enter business.’ Saved by my own lock but the lovely Germans next door lost everything and not a leg to stand on. Carry my own lock to this day!
