A well-thought through article, thank you. You touch on the many points of this tourism hydra, that I realise it can never be one size fits all - this word ‘sustainable’ can’t possibly fit all. If a business can speak plainly about their sustainability model from start to finish, then perhaps it could apply to them. Otherwise, as you say; pour yourself a drink’!

I’m thinking it would be great to see some kind of standardised ledger that shows the impact of a business (say in water and power use for example) from some baseline, and then (in real numbers—not percentages) show what they have reduced already, and what they are planning to do about the rest. At least then people are better informed and can make better decisions.

I agree, it’s not all about bamboo replacement or reduction in bottled water.
