There is a clear disconnect between the stated Thai policy to attract foreign tourists and the red tape tourists need to go through to stay in Thailand for more than a brief visit. I keep looking for extended tourist visa options too (90 days on arrival or a six-month tourist visa would be nice) or a discounted Thai Elite visa, as another alternative. I think the other issue with weekend travel everyone should be aware of after the IPCC report is the carbon cost: if you're going to pump tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere not to mention water and soot into the higher atmosphere, better get more bang for your buck than two days scratching the surface.
