I've kept almost every postcard I've ever been sent! A few months ago I was chatting online with an old friend and she mentioned her trip to Cairo many years ago. But she couldn't remember what year - late 80s, early 90s? I said I'd get back to her on that - yup, found the postcard, and the exact date she wrote it! My Dad used to travel for work in 1950s/60s/70s to places in Africa, South America and parts of Asia (he was a power transmission engineer) and he'd always send postcards to me and my brother (individual cards). Looking at them now, and reading his messages, brings back precious memories (he died 12 years ago). And most of those pix really are of another world now!

That, for me, is why postcards are so special. It is the personal interaction that is key. Do I look through Facebook to see old photos that friends & family have posted of their holidays? No!

And I still send postcards - if I can find them, which sadly is not always the case these days. And I do try to match the postcard with the person - cousin will like the one of the brightly coloured tropical gardens, and the view of the mountains is for my rock-climbing nephew, for instance.

Yes, agree. There is something special about going through old postcards, and in today’s world of messaging etcetera makes them all the more special when people still make the effort to send one.

On the upside, now I can send a live photo or video via email or Facebook or WhatEver. It's a personalized, individualized post card in real time and a meaningful way to share experiences with people who matter to me. Each photo is actively shared with that person only. It's a lovely way to keep in touch, but it does tend to isolate me from the other people around me too.

Yup for sure, the newer tech can really be used well to transport where you are to someone on the other side of the planet. Quite amazing. The only thing missing is smell and I’m sure that’s coming soon!

Aerogrammes! Man, I haven't thought of those in decades!

As for the influencer thing, I firmly believe that as with most things in life, there is good and bad and all. And that it can depend on which part of the influencer you are touching. And perhaps the influencers one follows says as much about you as it does them.

I follow one young woman who is huge but she does pretty amazing things with a great message and I have great respect for her. Another guy posts about having ALS and I'll let him influence me any day.

Yeah I think it is very much the case of sifting through for the diamonds. Food in particular there are some standout cases—but also some very ordinary plates. Art mimicking life I guess.
